Free (mostly non-Catholic) Bible Study Software

  • e-Sword: A very useful Bible study tool, lots of free add-ons and modules, some for purchase. Looks like the printing options might be really handy. Check out the free graphics and extras too. Received this note from Michael Jacques:

Just to let you know about free bible programs.  Esword has modules available for Catholics,  The Catholic commentary on Holy Scripture by Bernard Orchard,  The Catholic commentary  Haydock, and Lapide, Catholic Catechism, Catholic 1919 dictionary and Catholic 1919 encyclopedia, Summa Theologia, Early Church teachings -Church fathers all available for download at http://www.biblesupport.com/ or here at https://sites.google.com/site/apostolicapologetics/resources/e-sword-modules.
Also all Esword modules can be converted to function in the free bible program “The Word” [see below]. Many of these modules are now also produced for Logos.”

  • Bible Explorer: Free downloadable Bible study software for PC or Mac. Full featured, lots of freebies (such as St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate). NAB and RSV (with apocrypha) available for purchase. (Note: That’s not the Ignatius version, not the Catholic Edition; it’s Protestant with the apocrypha added.)
  • Biblos.com Online Bible Study Tools: Search, Read, Study the Bible in Many Languages. Not Catholic but they do have the Douay Rheims, which is a Catholic Bible based on the Vulgate, listed up there with all the other non-Catholic versions.
  • The Word: Free downloadable Bible study software with many free add-on modules, including the Douay-Rheims-Challoner English version of the Vulgate and the English version of the Septuagint.

Catholic Bible Study Software: Not free but oh so amazing!

Verbum Scripture Study Software and Much More!

I had written here before that I hadn’t found any desirable Bible study software for Mac that was also Catholic. That was before I bit the bullet and bought Verbum from Logos. I started out with a base package, then upgraded, and finally upgraded all the way to the Capstone package. I’ve been using Verbum for a year now and I’m still discovering things about the software itself and my marvelous library, too. Using Verbum has revolutionized the way I study Scripture and the way I study the faith. Amazing. Absolutely amazing. And, yes, I do run Capstone on my 13″ MacBook Air, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 512GB SDD. This is the machine I use most of the time. My workhorse. My baby. ;)
